Piggery Demonstration Project
The teachers association to cater for children (TTATCC) was formed in 2006 and fully registered in 2007 as a community based organization in Buwenge town council Jinja district-UGANDA.

The low – income levels in Buwenge Town council have a number of negative consequences in the homes of the registered children. Such as: inadequate basic needs, early marriages, theft, school drop outs, malnutrition, divorce and inaccessibility to medical care.

This project will fund the purchase of 10 pigs at a cost of just $71 per pig. Cost includes initial food and medicine expenses associated with starting a pig raising operation. Once funded, the sale of 20% of the offspring will support the continuing food and medicine needs. The other 80% of the offspring will be given to the needy orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) once the OVC are trained in the care of the pigs. TTATCC and the local community will bear the labor and expense of constructing the housing for the pigs. Completed!

The Piggery demonstration project is intended to address the above problems through equipping the registered children and other care givers with the skills and knowledge of looking after small animals and there after 80% of the piglets will be distributed to the registered children at no cost.

Despite the efforts put forward by the teachers association to cater for children in addressing the problem of low income levels amongst the registered children and the care givers such as the chicken rearing, Banana and Pineapple growing etc, poverty has continually affected the registered children and the care givers. 80% of the children eat only one meal per day and only 40% of the homes of the registered children have permanent shelter.

The piggery project is desired to equip the OVCs and the care givers with the skills of rearing small animals and improve the income levels of homes of the registered children.

This project was established in April, 2010 with twelve (12) pigs.

As of July, 2010 seven of the original 12 pigs have conceived and four have delivered.

Ten families have already received two piglets each.

The orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) are gaining valuable experience by managing the pigs.
