Chicken Raising Project to Support Orphans and Vulnerable Children
The teachers association to cater for children (TTATCC) was formed in 2006 and fully registered in 2007 as a community based organization in Buwenge town council Jinja district-UGANDA by involving a group of Christian men and women, professional teachers and pastors after a careful assessment of the needs of the children whose parents died of HIV/AIDS or just being poorest of the poor persons in the community. TTATCC is a grassroots community based organization formed as a civil society with a purpose of supporting/caring for vulnerable members within the society, particularly children and caregivers who have either been affected by or infected with HIV/AIDS and could not afford the basics of life.
The chicken raising project will be implemented by TTATCC to:
-Build capacity of orphans in life support
-Provide orphans/vulnerable children with scholastic materials at Light Academy Education study centre.
-Provide orphans with a source of highly nutritional food.
TTATCC's purpose is to develop and support sustainable income generating activities that enable civil society to strengthen community based care mechanisms for children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Completed! Click on this need's title to read more.
HIV/AIDS is one of the most serious problem Jinja is facing presently just like many districts in UGANDA. This is because the pandemic has lead to high number of death of parents mainly fathers this leaving a great number of orphans and widows. Hence distress and depression upon these people is so great than they are put in apposition of rejection and self-pity.
Despite positive steps taken by Jinja district and other local NGOs to mainstream care for orphans in the district Education and health policy frameworks, It is observed that the impact of HIV/AIDS on children has not reduced especially in Buwenge town council. Most orphans in this town council still face stigma and rejection and this has resulted in restrictions of orphans access to health care, Education and other social services provided by the district that are crucial to their growth and development.
There are community based care models that have been developed by Jinja district to help increase access to care for people with HIV/AIDS. However, in Buwenge town council and Buwenge rural such programs have focused on adult care, counseling and support while over looking children’s’ concerns about continuity of school, future employment and their general well being. The scenario worsens after their parents die as this ends the link of home care programs to the family leaving orphans to grapple with life there after. It is against this background that TTATCC decided to take up the challenge and address the plight of these orphans in Buwenge town council and Buwenge rural sub counties through this project. It is envisaged that by the end of the project period, the orphans in these areas will be empowered in skills of income generating and success of this project will serve as model to be used to expand through out the district, OVCs will have received scholastic materials, uniforms and nutritional foods.
The OVCs are gaining practical skills of raising domestic chickens as they take part in the daily activities of this project. Forty three chickens were purchased to start this project. Some have already started laying eggs.
