HARKITA Water Project
HARKITA is an active and very responsive charitable organization in India which is currently focused on a large water project in Madhya Pradesh and Mukarba Village. This need when funded will help complete the funding and collaboration amongst several groups to provide two new latrines, a new well and water storage system providing free clean easily accessible water for these villagers, and an ongoing education project regarding sanitation.

Specific objectives
Haritika is seeking to fill the gaps in service provision as a priority in Saderi of the poorer project villages of Nowgong block of District chhatarpur,Madhya Pradesh of India, supporting under-served populations, the poorest of the poor, to access to water, sanitation and hygiene promotion services. In doing so, Haritika is aiming to reach out to disadvantaged communities, and share with them a tested and successful approach to sustainable community managed integrated water, sanitation and hygiene promotion projects. This process of community empowerment is facilitated via Haritika’s partner with Community organisations, working towards the same overall objectives of the alleviation of poverty, and access to water, sanitation and health.

Expected results:

• Sustainable community managed water supply systems which respond to community needs and demands, serving a total rural population of 469.
• 1 boreholes with 24x7 sustained water supply in seven project villages
• 3 boreholes with handpumps restored
• 94 individual Household latrine cum bath room constructed in proposed Bodi village of Nowgong Block District Chhatarpur
• Community empowerment from active participation in all stages of the project cycle
• Community empowerment from active decision-making with regards to the choice of technology options
• 1 Community management (VWSC) committees trained for each water supply system (one CMC may have the responsibility for more than one system)
• Technical training received by each committee on maintenance and management training (book keeping, revenue collection etc.)
• The assignment of trained caretakers for every water point, who are competent in, and responsible for, the collection of cash contributions, operation, repair and maintenance of the water supply systems.
• Integrated water, sanitation and hygiene promotion projects completed in village schools.
• The empowerment of 469 village inhabitants following the participation in baseline surveys.
Sustainable changes in hygiene behaviours and better sanitation practises
• 60 % of the communities will have adopted safe hygiene practises
• At least half of the beneficiary population will have knowledge of the 5 key hygiene behaviours:
• Hand-washing at key times
• Safe preparation and storage of food
• Protection of water from contamination
• Safe disposal of human faeces
• Safe disposal of household solid waste and drainage
• 70 household latrines cum bathroom will be built and in use
