UVP Well #20
Over the past five years, Uganda Village Project (UVP) has been striving to make safe water an accessible reality for residents of Iganga District. They are working not only to increase the number of shallow wells in the district in order to cut down on water collection time, but they are aiming to eliminate water contamination altogether. Through promoting a comprehensive safe water education program, which highlights various parts of the “safe water chain,” UVP works to teach villagers how to keep safe water clean. Please help ChooseAneed and Uganda Village Project continue to fund these wells! Click on this link GPS Well Locations to view 14 of these wells via GPS coordinates on Google Maps. Uganda Village Project began constructing safe water sources in 2005. Following a brief period of ad hoc approaches to building new water sources, UVP determined that a more strategic and systemic model was needed. After more than a year of researching and working with local leaders, engineers, rural families and community based organizations (CBOs), UVP launched their Community Constructed Shallow Well (CCSW) project.

This innovative CCSW model mobilizes local resources in order to maximize community participation and ownership, while minimizing the need for external support and financing. The village contributes all locally available inputs – such as sand and bricks – as well as feeding and housing the mason during the construction process. The District Water Office (DWO) contributes well parts, like pipes and rods. UVP, through international donations, purchases the remaining necessary components, including cement.

Initial reports indicate that the CCSW project has been highly successful. Following a promising pilot of six (6) wells in 2007, UVP signed an MOU with the DWO to facilitate the construction of 10-15 additional wells in 2008. By the end of 2009, UVP constructed a total of forty-one (41) shallow wells in Iganga providing several thousands of villagers with safer water. ChooseAneed helped fund 10 of these wells.
