Brian Dawson is currently working as an Emergency Medicine Physician in Eastern North Carolina. He is very happily married to Mary, also a board member, and they have two sons: Evan and Blaine. Brian serves ChooseAneed by helping keep the website up to date and finding new projects. Click on Brian's name to learn more about why he has helped start this project and his thoughts on why it is so important.

The basic concept behind ChooseAneed is that "we", and by "we" I mean any of us in developed countries, are blessed beyond belief with resources of all types. Our lives are rich beyond even our own understanding. My eyes are opened whenever I travel abroad and experience the different ways in which individuals struggle to live throughout the world. I am by no means well traveled, I don't know the solutions to the worlds problems, I will probably never make a huge change in this world. However, what I CAN do is choose to make a difference for some people. I know it sounds trite but we can each make a difference if we choose to do so.

We can each identify someone in need and choose to meet that need. I firmly believe that those of us who have been given so much should be held accountable for what we did with our resources and should feel a sense of obligation, if not desire, to help others who are not as fortunate.

Personally speaking here, I have found that even the poorest of the poor in the US would be wealthy in comparison to other countries I have visited. For example, in the United States you can walk in the Emergency department and we have to treat you regardless of your ability to pay. In the US you can walk into public restrooms and use facilities that do not exist in any public place in many countries. In the US you can drink fresh water without concern for disease or payment. In the US we have all sorts of assistance programs for the poor and underprivleged. My point is that those of us who have been given much should attempt to do something to help those who have not and do not have the same opportunities.

This website is one of our ways of trying to make others aware of the problems we, or others, have identified that could be met by individuals or small groups. These are often small projects and would never get funded by some grant from an agency like the Gates Foundation, or a government. I hope you will join me in attempting to make a difference in our world.
